The Necklace Nebula (Picture of the Day)

The Necklace nebula (also called PN G054.2-03.4) is a planetary nebula which is about 15,000 light years away in the constellation of Sagitta. It spans approximately 2 light years across. The nebula got its name due to the dense gas and dust which resembles a necklace. The nebula is caused by a pair of stars orbiting very close together. The two stars are revolving around each other so fast that it completes one orbit in roughly 1 day.
