Spirograph Nebula (Picture of the Day)

Spirograph Nebula or IC 418
The Spirograph Nebula is a planetary nebula about 2000 light years away and about 0.3 light years in diameter in the constellation of Lepus. The unusual pattern and texture of this nebula is not well understood. It is believed to be caused by some chaotic winds from the central star. About a thousand yeas ago, this star would probably been a red giant. When the star ran out of nuclear fuel, the outer layers of the star could have started expanding and thus, the core of the star would become a white dwarf in the future.
