NGC 2841: The Flocculent Spiral Galaxy (Picture of the Day)

NGC 2841
NGC 2841 is a giant unbarred spiral galaxy in the constellation of Ursa Major. It is about 46 million light years away. It's also a flocculent spiral galaxy. A flocculent spiral galaxy is a spiral galaxy whose spiral arms are discontinuous and patchy. About 30% of the spiral galaxies discovered have been flocculent galaxies. The other type of spiral galaxy with well defined arms is called 'grand design spiral galaxy'.
