Gum Nebula (Picture of the Day)

Gum Nebula
The Gum Nebula is a large emission nebula in the constellations of Vela and Puppis. It is very close to us and very large as well, thus it is hard to see. It is only 450 light years away from us. The nebula is thought to be a supernova remnant over a million years old. The huge size is believed to be caused by the expansion of the supernova and it is still expanding.
