W5 or IC 1848: Pillars of Star Formation (Picture of the Day)

W5 or IC 1848 is a radio source within the Soul Nebula. It is located about 6,500 light years away in the constellation of Cassiopeia. It is a star forming region and the astronomers are using this region to learn more about the processes of star formation. The stars in the core are actually older than the stars near the edges. The above image is just a part of the W5 which actually spans for about 2,000 light years.
