Stingray Nebula: Youngest Known Planetary Nebula (Fact of the Day)

Stingray Nebula
Stingray Nebula (also known as Hen 3-1357) is the youngest known planetary nebula which is about 18,000 light years away in the constellation of Ara. Just 40 years ago, it was a protoplanetary nebula where no nebular material was detected but now the bubbles, rings and the ionized gases are visible in the picture above. The hot central star at the center of the nebula is evolving toward a final white dwarf phase.
