Horsehead Nebula or Barnard 33 (Picture of the Day)

Horsehead Nebula
Horsehead Nebula (also known as Barnard 33) is a dark nebula which is about 1,500 light years away from us and is about 5 light years tall. It is located towards the south of the star Alnitak in the Orion Constellation. It was first discovered in the late 1800s and is one of the most identifiable nebulae in the sky. The red glow is mainly due to the hydrogen gas behind the nebula, ionized by the star Sigma Orionis. There is also massive star formation within the dark cloud.
