Crescent Nebula or NGC 6888 (Picture of the Day)

Crescent Nebula
Crescent Nebula (also known as NGC 6888, Caldwell 27 and Sharpless 105) is an emission nebula which is about 5,000 light years away in the constellation of Cygnus. It is a cosmic bubble which is about 25 light years in diameter which is blown by winds from the centre of the nebula by a bright and massive star. The stellar wind is from a Wolf-Rayet star (WR 136) which became a red giant aorund 400,000 years ago. The star is actually ejecting the equvalent of the Sun's mass every 10,000 years.
