It was discovered by two astronomers from the Lulin Observatory (from where the name was derived) in Taiwan. It has an eccentricity of 0.99998 which means it is nearly parabolic. It has an orbital period of about 42,000 years. The picture above is against a backdrop of millions of stars and galaxies. Some of the galaxies in the background lie at a distance of 100 million light years. When this picture was taken, the comet was about 3.6 light minutes away from Earth.
