Cigar Galaxy: Closest Starburst Galaxy (Fact of the Day)

Cigar Galaxy
Cigar Galaxy (also known as Messier 82, M82 or NGC 3034) is the closest starburst galaxy to our Milky Way Galaxy. A starburst galaxy is a galaxy with exceptionally high rate of star formation when compared to the normal galaxies. This galaxy is located about 12 million light years away from us in the constellation of Ursa Major. The Hubble Space Telescope revealed 197 young massive clusters in the starburst core in the year 2005. In the center of the Cigar Galaxy, young stars are being born 10 times faster than they are inside our entire Milky Way Galaxy.
