Elephant's Trunk Nebula (Picture of the Day)

Elephant's Trunk Nebula
Elephant's Trunk Nebula is an emission nebula in the star cluster IC 1396. It is about 2,400 light years away from Earth in the constellation of Cepheus. It is named so because of its appearance at visible wavelengths. More than 100 young stars are found forming in this nebula.

The bright young star which is to the left of the nebula in the picture also formed from this nebula but now the jets and winds of particles emitted from the star have pushed away (still pushing away) the gas and dust away from the star.
