The Eagle Nebula (Picture of the Day)

Eagle Nebula (M16 or NGC 6611)
The Eagle nebula (M16 or NGC 6611) is an emission nebula in the constellation of Serpens. It is an open cluster of stars which is located approximately 6,500 light years away. The diameter of the nebula is about 20 light years. It is mainly comprised of star forming gas and dust. The nebula is about 5.5 million years old.
