NGC 4651: The Umbrella Galaxy (Picture of the Day)

The Umbrella Galaxy
The Umbrella Galaxy is a spiral shaped galaxy which is 35 million light years away in the constellation of Coma Berenices. It is about 50,000 light years in diameter which is about half the size of our Milky Way Galaxy. It was termed the "Umbrella Galaxy" due to the faint umbrella shaped structure to the right of the galaxy, which is known to be composed of tidal star streams. It is also observed now that this feature is pretty common in the nearby galaxies as well.
