Comet McNaught (Picture of the Day)

Comet McNaught
Comet McNaught (also known as the Great Comet of 2007) is a non-periodic comet. The Ulysses spacecraft encountered the tail of the ionized gases of the comet about 224 million km away from its nucleus. This is about 1.5 times the distance between the Earth and the Sun. But, currently comet Hyakutake has the record for the longest tail of about 500 million km from the nucles. It has also been the brightest comet over the past 40 years. It has an orbital period of about 92,600 years.
