Comet Hyakutake (Picture of the Day)

Comet Hyakutake
The above picture was taken on the comet Hyakutake's closest approach to Earth. It is also known as the "Great Comet of 1996". Its passage was one of the closest cometary approaches in the last 200 years. According to the Ulysses spacecraft, Hyakutake comet had the longest tail known for a comet. Due to the gravitational influences of the large planets in our Solar system, the comet will take about 100,000 years to come back.
