Andromeda Galaxy (Picture of the Day)

Andromeda Galaxy (M31)
The Andromeda Galaxy (M31 or NGC 224) is a very similar spiral galaxy to our Milky Way Galaxy. It is one of the closest galaxies to us, which is about 2.5 million light years away in the constellation of Andromeda. It is largest galaxy in the Local Group. It is estimated that Andromeda Galaxy has about 1 trillion stars compared to our galaxy which has about 200-400 billion stars. Another interesting fact which needs to be mentioned is that our galaxy and the Andromeda galaxy are expected to collide in approximately 4.5 billion years. One of the prediction is that two of the galaxies would collide to form a giant elliptical galaxy.
